Why this night is different

More than a show. A memory in the making.

Streaming can't give you the hush when the curtain rises, the first notes from a real orchestra, or the look on a child's face when the snow begins to fall on stage.

Live music, the way Tchaikovsky intended

The Tchaikovsky Virtuosi perform the full score live, from the Waltz of the Flowers to the shimmering Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Your neighbors, on stage

A cast of over 100 young dancers from across the Triangle, many of whom have trained for years to step into these roles.

The story

One Christmas Eve, a gift comes to life

If you're new to ballet, you don't need to know a thing. The story is told entirely through music and movement, and it's easy for all ages to follow.

Act I

The Party and the Battle

At a festive family gathering, young Clara receives a wooden nutcracker from her mysterious godfather, Drosselmeyer. When the clock strikes midnight, the room transforms.

  • The Christmas tree grows to towering height
  • Toy soldiers battle the Mouse King and his army
  • The Nutcracker becomes a prince
  • A journey through the glittering Land of Snow

Act II

The Land of Sweets

Clara and her Prince arrive in an enchanted kingdom, where the Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them with a celebration of dances from around the world.

  • Spanish, Arabian, Chinese, and Russian dances
  • The sweeping Waltz of the Flowers
  • The Sugar Plum Fairy's grand pas de deux
  • A final farewell before Clara wakes at home
The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was one of the first pieces ever written for the celesta, an instrument Tchaikovsky had shipped home from Paris in secret so no rival composer could use it first.A little ballet history for intermission

  4. 1944

San Francisco Ballet stages the first complete American production.

  5. 1954

George Balanchine's New York City Ballet version helps make it an American holiday ritual.
